To facilitate broader participation, the TBI Online has 2 levels of commitment: audit and certificate of Buddhist studies;
Audit Student
An auditing student is enrolled in the class, has access to all class materials, is not expected to deliver presentations, or complete makeup work when absent, and is not pursuing a 4-year certificate of Buddhist Studies, but they must still pay for the class. However, an auditing student can obtain credit toward a 4-year certificate when they decide to become fully enrolled in the certificate program, provided they have had full attendance during the auditing year and met the expectation below.
Expectations for Audit Students
- Audit students are welcome to attend classes or other activities of the DTO-TBI as they see fit.
- While in the virtual classroom auditors are expected to always keep their cameras on to promote participation and inspire engagement.
- Full virtual class participation is encouraged but not expected.
- There are no other requirements. Join us!
Path leading to a Certificate of Buddhist Studies
A Certificate of Buddhist Studies is conferred by the Dharma Teacher Order after four years of study, contingent upon the recommendation of senior leaders and on the approval of the Venerable Thich Tri Hoang.
Expectations for Students Seeking a Certificate of Buddhist Studies
Aware of the generosity, effort, and care on the part of both students and teachers to make this program possible, and with gratitude for receiving the gift of the Dharma, students at The Buddhist Institute are asked to commit to the following:

- Meet with assigned mentor before and after presentation.
- Actively participate in class, both during the presentation via Zoom and in the Canvas online classroom.
- Develop a regular personal meditation practice.
